Memorial Day

A buddy of mine, who is a Ranger, shared this with me. It's well-said and it should be spread for others to read and understand. I agree with the idea that we honor the fallen by continuing forward in an honorable way, in a way that would make them happy.

Conviction Strong Radio - Episode 4 - Navigating through setbacks

Momentum. In this episode Craig Hysell and I talk about what happens when everything is going great and then you hit that bump in the road or, even more challenging, a road block. Bumps and road blocks in the road aren’t a big deal. They happen. Even when they’re hard, we can still learn from them if we are seeking to.  The tough times are the parts we remember most. When you get stuck, keep your cool and remember “Feet, five, twenty-five.” Conviction Strong Radio (CSR) is about finding your balance across family, fitness and career. Nine Line Foundation's 3rd Annual 5K/10K

Saturday May 21st 2016 was supposed to be a day of rain. The rain held off, so we went to the beach to enjoy our day off and spend time with friends. We registered for this race weeks prior and our motivation to do it was waning. I didn't really want to or plan to run as we got out of the car, on Hutchinson Island just across the river from downtown Savannah, Georgia. I thought I'd wait instead, for the finish of the race, and I'd bullshit with some other people waiting. The race began and I started to jog out of the gate. I ended up jogging until I came back across the finish line, roughly 30 minutes later. The last half mile of the race, the finish line and immediately after was a bit emotional for me. I'm ready to be done well before the third mile of the race, so in order to motivate myself I find the nearest guy who is slowing down and I encourage him to keep moving, which keeps me moving (similar to how we would support each other on active duty). The l...

Memorial Day Murph 2016

"All gave some, some gave all". Anyone who has served has sacrificed, however some unfortunately have died while serving. Memorial Day is about remembering those we've lost, and honoring them by recalling how they lived. The origins of special services to honor those who die in war can be found in antiquity. The Athenian leader Pericles offered a tribute to the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian War over 24 centuries ago that applies today, to the 1.1 million Americans who have died in our nation's wars: "Not only are they commemorated by columns and inscriptions, but there dwells also an unwritten memorial of them, graven not on stone but in the hearts of men". This holiday, to me, is about esprit de corps and the bigger picture. This is about honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the benefit of others. For those who have lost someone in combat, I want to close with this quote: "I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage th...

Isolate Rehearse Repeat

Isolate Rehearse Repeat. (@sofsurvivor) In life, in the gym, almost everywhere you look you can find a larger task which can be broken down, creating smaller tasks for you to isolate, rehearse and repeat until proficiency is achieved.  Breaking bigger tasks down into smaller tasks makes the larger task feel easier to handle and it begins to create a system of confidence building. With each little task that is accomplished, the completion of the larger task is closer and now you are more proficient at the little tasks which give you momentum moving forward. In the gym, try warming up safely with your eyes closed. Make sure you have room around you and that you're keeping your technique your first priority. Then close your eyes, feel where your body is in space, where your weight is in your feet.  Listen - identify what is going on near you (without looking), then try to identify what else is going on 20 feet from you, all the while taking time to breath, smell...
